On October 7th, UT Dallas held its annual Marketing Round Table giving students across the Graduate and Undergraduate level a sense of the networking atmosphere. Walking into the room we sensed an aura of professionalism with everyone dressed their best and employers scouting the best. There were nine tables spread across the room and each table had an employer from one of the top companies and 4 to 5 students who could speak to these professionals.
Texas Instruments, State Farm, Modern Woodmen, J.C. Penny, Globe Runner, AT&T, Kohl’s, MindHandle and AppFolio were the companies present. We had the opportunity of speaking and asking questions to these professionals about internship opportunities, career paths in their company, the internship journey and anything else we wanted to know about their industry and field. But, there was a catch… In the 12 timed minutes we had with each employer we were not allowed to give our resumes. However we were allowed to collect their contact information to get in touch with them.
The experience on the whole was a very distinct practice of networking and it allowed students to speak for themselves instead of letting a piece of paper define them. We had the opportunity to present ourselves to the professionals through the questions we ask and the way we come across both as students and as individuals.
“The whole experience of this Marketing Round Table was a pleasant surprise, I did not expect such an interaction with the professionals. As an international student this event gave me an opportunity to network with employers, which is very important in the United States. The environment of the event was very different from anything I have experienced before as professionals were down to earth and there was a sense of camaraderie throughout the event.” – Mohit Mundra, MS Marketing
